Fibromyalgia Q & A

Can Chiropractic Care Treat Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia can cause many tender spots all over the body, including triggering back pain, neck pain, and leg cramps. Many people who suffer from fibromyalgia pain have found relief through chiropractic care. By using simple adjustments to the neck and spine, it restores alignment and can significantly help to reduce pain all over their bodies.

How Effective is Chiropractic Care in Fibromyalgia Patients?

Many studies have shown the benefits of chiropractic care in fibromyalgia patients as an alternative to medication. Chiropractic care treatment scored surprisingly high in the effectiveness of spinal manipulation for relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. After only fifteen treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered less pain and fatigue and could enjoy an improved quality of sleep.

How Do Manipulations Help Fibromyalgia?

To adjust the spine and neck, spinal manipulation or adjustments are performed. These consist of quick, yet gentle, pressure thrusts to manipulate the vertebrae. Manipulation typically consists of a thrust to one or more of the spinal vertebra, by twisting, turning, or hand pressure. This allows for the vertebra to shift back into alignment. When spinal manipulations are performed, there is usually a cracking or popping noise. This signifies a healthy release of built up oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide within the joint. As these gasses are released, you should notice immediate relief. Many fibromyalgia patients suffer from a condition known as upper cervical spinal stenosis. This causes the coverings of the upper spine to become compressed and sends pain throughout the entire body. Dr. Coonrad adjusts the head and neck so the spine is no longer compressed, helping to relieve widespread pain symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Manipulations can provide numerous benefits including:

  • Improved range of motion in your joints
  • Increased blood flow
  • Increased production of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers
  • Better pain tolerance
